CHLORAKAS VILLAGE
Climbing up the steep St George hill from the coast road brings you to the more traditional face of the village and its heart. Here you will find a different pace of life where time appears to have stood still. Outside the many small coffee houses, some of them literally the front room of a private house, the older men of the village can be found playing their national pastime – Tavli (better known as backgammon). Apart from the tourist industry, Chlorakas supports a flourishing agricultural area which supplies many of the local supermarkets with citrus fruits, salad foods and vegetables. Chlorakas has many shops which cater for all daily requirements and a substantial sized supermarket as well as banks, bars and chemists. In fact you do not have to leave the village to do the weekly shopping as everything is catered for right down to doctors, dentists and vets! Chlorakas has many old buildings of historical and architectural merit: one in particular is the tiny 12th century church of Ayios Nikolaos which is reputed to be of the Frankish era with a small monastery attached to it, making it quite a unique building.
