YERMASOYIA

A beautiful area with high hills boasting excellent sea views.  The name Yermasoyia is derived from Iera (sacred) and Mesoya (Mediterranean), coming from the fact that the initial settlement was so close to the Mediterranean Sea. It is an ancient village, originally built on the eastern side of the valley near the Ayios Georgios Chapel known as Paliomonastro (old chapel).  The village appears on many medieval maps and, during the Frank occupation, it was owned by the Knights Templar as part of the ‘Gran Commanderie’. The medieval bridge built on the riverbed of the Amathos River in the Potamos Yermasoyia area is one of today’s few surviving Frankish monuments.   Agriculture and farming played an important role in the village’s economy supported with the construction of the Dam in 1968. The village itself maintains its traditional character and is within walking distance from the coast, just 2km away through a beautiful valley of citrus trees.  Due to its close proximity to Limassol, the area has witnessed a remarkable growth, now stretching all the way to the beachfront.  Hotels and residential developments have sprung up, accompanied by pubs, restaurants, cafes and clubs.
