Neapolis means “New Town” - during the Early Byzantine period, Limassol was named Neapolis. After the destruction of Amathus in the 12th century, the name Neapolis came to be used right up to the present day. After the island became independent, Limassol developed both demographically and economically. There was explosive growth in all sectors, as the town became a city and the most important tourist and commercial centre of Cyprus.
